We traveled from Montefalco on a relatively short drive to Assisi. First, we stopped to visit the Santa Maria degli Angeli in the valley below Mt. Subasio. This is where Francis spent time during his life and where he died.
We then rode the bus to a steep street that took us up the hill to Assisi . We had free time to wander around to visit churches or castles, shop, and have lunch. William had visited here in 2008. We searched for a gelato shop he patronized then-- and found it!
Then, we met up to go to the Bascilica as a group. Our guide, Giuseppe, did a great job explaining aspects of the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi, detailing Francis’ commitment to peace and to calling out corruption. Unfortunately, there were no photos allowed inside the Basilica (though this prohibition was not well enforced, I honored it out of respect). It is a gorgeous cathedral and well worth a visit.
